I was appointed by the London Borough of Southwark to manage the completion of this project. The estate blocks had been linked by brick towers which held staircases and lifts. Through the middle of the blocks, long artificially lit corridors gave access to the front doors of the flats. Anybody could enter. It was a place of alienation and ambush. The new work inserted attractive secure lifts and stairs into the blocks, shortened the corridors and provided secure communal gardens. Residents now know they will meet neighbours or legitimate visitors when they enter their building. This is a fundamental requirement for community building.
